While perusing tech company job postings lately, we’ve been seeing more chief of staff roles pop up. On Technical.ly’s own jobs board, we spotted an opening for the relatively new-to-the-tech-world role at SmartLogic.
There can be some slightly different spins on the job from startups on up to the White House. In this case, CEO Yair Flicker said that the majority of this person’s efforts will be focused externally at the Canton-based software development consultancy. The idea at SmartLogic is for the chief of staff to be a leader in Baltimore and within the company.
Always active on projects that are designed to help the local tech community, Flicker said the chief of staff will be executing on the new efforts that spring forth — for instance, anything that brings the community closer to the conversation around master planning for city government, or a new creative project that addresses a key issue.
Executing on such projects will likely involve collaboration with other businesses and organizations beyond SmartLogic, Flicker said, so about three-quarters of this person’s time will be dedicated to representing Flicker and the company externally.
“I’m looking for someone that can help in an external-facing role that can kick projects off and see where they go,” he said.
Another quarter of time will be working with the SmartLogic team, though this role won’t have direct reports. Instead, it will be dedicated to strategic planning to add project management and accountability to the software development projects the company completes for clients.
So who might be a fit? People management and finance help, but it goes beyond that: Flicker said an ideal candidate would have experience building coalitions and be excited about representing “outside the four walls” of SmartLogic.
“This person will have a lot of leeway to represent us and make their own decisions. It’s got to be somebody that I trust to make good decisions,” he said.
Exact duties have varied across chief of staff roles that we’ve seen so far, but one thread is beginning to coalesce: helping a CEO with lots of different responsibilities execute on priorities.

Venture for America (VFA) is hiring a Baltimore programs and talent senior associate to lead recruitment and programming for the region.
That means VFA, the nonprofit that places recent college graduates to work with startups and other entrepreneurial ventures in cities around the country, is looking for a leader to support local recruiting efforts in the Baltimore-D.C. region who will bring on the next cohort of fellows, and build out the programming for the current group.
The role brings a mix of event organizing, working with leadership to strengthen the program, and building strong partnerships and applicant relationships.

A well-designed posting will catch our eye, and bonus if there’s video: On Instagram, we spotted a posting for two developer roles at Mission Media.
The Inner Harbor-based creative agency is seeking a front-end developer with experience converting Photoshop mockups into CSS/HTML. Another opening is seeking a back-end developer who is preferably comfortable in PHP and experienced in responsive design.
Enough words, here’s the post:
