We already know Philly is big into esports. In case you somehow missed it, we’re getting a $50 million dollar stadium in 2021 for our professional Overwatch team, Philly Fusion. Plus, the Overwatch finals will be held in Philly in September.

On the amateur side, esports are booming at the university level. In March, for instance, Harrisburg University’s varsity team, the HU Storm, hosted 16 Pennsylvania schools for the collegiate tournament PA Cup.

Now, Glenside-based Arcadia University will become one of the only local schools with an official varsity team (Widener University has one, but Drexel University and University of Pennsylvania only have student-run club teams). Earlier this month, Arcadia announced it would be launching a varsity esports program in the fall of 2019, with two teams for each game. It’s also renovating a 1,500-square-foot space for an arena that will include 36 PCs for gaming and a projection screen so coaches can review games and develop strategy with the team.

Speaking of which: Arcadia is hiring four esports coaches for Overwatch, League of LegendsHearthstone (an e-card game from World of Warcraft) and Rocket League, aka car soccer.

Representatives from Arcadia said esports develop camaraderie among the students, and that it will have the same amount of support from the school as any other university athletic team.

“Esports brings students across disciplines together to compete and enjoy gameplay that challenges their critical thinking and problem-solving,” Brian Granata, director of athletics at Arcadia.

John Fazio, president of N3rd Street Gamers, said he thinks that Arcadia is only the beginning of varsity esports teams.

“It’s only a matter of time before every college and high school has an esports program the same as they have a soccer program,” Fazio said.

In April, former Smart City Director Ellen Hwang left the city government to lead the Philly outpost of the Knight Foundation. The office is now looking for a new director plus a fellow who can act as a program manager for Hwang’s first SmartCityPHL Roadmap initiative, Pitch & Pilot.

If you’re a smart cities pro who’s interested, get in while you can: The office is only taking applications for the director position through this Friday (and it looks like the fellow listing is already expired).
