Over in the Nemours Building in downtown Wilmington, construction on new coworking space The Mill is well underway. The grand opening is set for April 1 — mostly because guy-in-charge (and local architect) Robert Herrera thought it would be funny to open on April Fools’ Day. This update, however, is — wait for it — no joke. (We’ll be here all week.)
Here’s a status report:
- The space has a sleek new website.
- The Mill will be Wilmington’s first coworking space with a full bar, complete with a kegerator. The bar space is designed to fit a full catering crew for events. “It’s a point of pride of mine,” Herrera said of the space. He added that he’s looking for local breweries as suppliers.
- Customized Bluetooth speakers will be concealed in ceiling tiles of every office.
- The cap for full membership in the first phase of construction is 55 people.
- Every office will have at least one window.
- Herrera thinks small law firms might be a good fit at The Mill because a few offices are acoustically isolated from the rest of the coworking space.
- Herrera is excited about the details, like, for example, that he gets to use some reclaimed American chestnut wood.
- In phase one, 10 private offices with sliding glass doors — for $1,200 a month — will be built. So far four have been rented. Other offices: There are six 8-to-10-person offices and one 10-person office.
- Herrera’s big on sliding glass. Thirty-four desks behind sliding glass doors will also be available for $350.
- Members can book the 20-person conference room twice a week for free; otherwise, it can be booked for $20-30 based on demand.
- Phase one construction obviously means there’s a phase two, but Herrera was cautious in getting into those details. “The market will dictate expansion,” he said.
- Membership for working in the commons space is $45 a month.
- There’ll be a bookshelf-lined game lounge.
- Herrera is working with the Hagley Museum to exhibit patents in the lobby. He’s also interested in hanging local art.
