This new mural is made from 6,000 photographs printed at NextFab

Called "Mapping Freire," the mural is a project of artist Marcus Balum, the Mural Arts Program and Freire Charter School.

A new mural at 21st and Market Streets is made up of more than 6,000 photographs that were all printed at makerspace NextFab.

The mural, called “Mapping Freire,” was a project between the city’s Mural Arts Program, Freire Charter School and artist and NextFab member Marcus Balum. Balum worked with Freire teachers to design photography projects for students, based on what they were studying at the time.

The photographs in the mural, which are meant to depict how students and Philadelphians navigate the city, were taken by Freire students, students in a Mural Arts after-school program, Balum and the public, through the hashtag #mappingfreire.

The mural was dedicated late last week.
