First it was wine, then it was craft beer and now? Well, it might be craft mead, at least as far as the folks at Liquid Alchemy Beverages are concerned.
Next month, Delaware’s first meadery will open its doors in an industrial building off Little Mill Creek in Wilmington. Cofounders Terri Sorantino and Jeffrey Cheskin have taken on an age-old brewing process: instead of grapes for a wine base, they use honey.
Sorantino acknowledged potential market challenges in a recent News Journal video. “Mead is not mainstream,” she said.

The pair likened their journey to Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione’s early days. “Although beer’s been around forever, craft beer and the way Sam started putting things together … was new for the time,” Cheskin said. “Everybody was looking at Miller and Budweiser and Coors saying, ‘Why would you make something else?'”
Last year, the company launched a Kickstarter campaign that raised $14,060.
