The Hen Hatch grand finale returns to the Queen on April 24

The University of Delaware competition for entrepreneurs ends with the final seven teams pitching for a piece of $100,000 in funding.

Hen Hatch, the University of Delaware’s startup funding competition featuring entrepreneurs who are current students, alumni or UD employees, is back this month for its final round, where the finalists will compete for startup cash and prizes totaling $100,000.

UD’s Horn Entrepreneurship program is organizing the event for the fifth year.

This year’s Student Track finalists are:

  • D150 Fueling: A custom car refueling startup that sends fueling trucks to clients’ lots to fill up company vehicles, eliminating employee downtime associated with refueling and providing complete and accurate records of fuel usage. The team includes Bailey O’Brien, College of Engineering, Class of 2018; Samuel Bacharach, Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, Class of 2019; and Amedeo DeLuca, College of Engineering, Class of 2018.
  • IntraText: An application that combines interaction and text, transforming content to engage users in the digital age. The team includes Jamie Levy, College of Arts and Sciences, Class of 2018; Kerry Shwartz, Lerner College, Class of 2019; Kristen Brokaw, Lerner College, Class of 2018; and Gina Gesualdi, Lerner College, Class of 2018.
  • Lyapunov Technologies: Merges finance with the field of control systems engineering to provide technology-driven financial services that innovate risk management. The team includes Anthony Rossi, Lerner College and College of Engineering, Class of 2018; and Duanyi Wei, College of Engineering, Class of 2018.
  • Wilminvest: Renovating vacant properties in the city of Wilmington and leasing them as permanent supportive housing. The team includes Joel Amin and Bryce Fender, both from the Lerner College, Class of 2019, and Demetrius Thorn, unaffiliated.

This year’s Alumni, Faculty, Staff Track finalists are:

  • OPS, LLC: Supports drinking water infrastructure systems, recording reliable, secure, field-data for analysis and helping to reduce violation restitution costs. The team includes Lee Beauchamp, College of Engineering, Class of 2005; Matthew Beard, unaffiliated; Tai Nguyen, unaffiliated; and Timothy Gantzhorn, unaffiliated.
  • Smartbooks: Uses smart tech to allow adults to personalize children’s books through an avatar creation app. The team includes Courtney Hewitt, Lerner College, Class of 2011; Rossiny Beaucejour, College of Engineering, Class of 2014; Garry Johnson, Lerner College, Class of 2018; and Taji Hardwick, Lerner College, Class of 2018.
  • Veramorph LLC: Developing multi-functional materials for more convenient and effective oral delivery of poorly absorbed drugs. The team includes Paul Godfrin, College of Engineering, Class of 2015.

Former Hen Hatch winners include Carvertise (then PenguinAds), TheraV (then Vibrating Therapeutic Apparel) and NERDit NOW.

The Hen Hatch Final and Innovation Showcase will be April 24, from 5–9 p.m., at The Queen in Wilmington. Admission — refreshments included — is $20 for students and $50 for community members. Early-bird discount is available through April 6.
