How are some of the brightest tech companies finding the best talent?
They’re opening offices in vibrant downtowns, creating company culture that’s more meaningful than ping-pong tables and meeting jobseekers where they are.
The thing is, these rules haven’t changed much since we first started writing about tech-talent acquisition woes on the East Coast. In 2017, 90 percent of startup executives said it was either extremely or somewhat challenging to find workers with the skills they need to grow their business, in the national Startup Outlook Survey put together annually by Silicon Valley Bank. That’s not far off from the 89 percent that felt the same way back in 2013.
Companies are changing, and the subtleties of building them are too, but the strategy for finding good people in the millennial-driven workforce is much the same.
This year, we felt it might be helpful to look back at our story archive and put together a comprehensive ebook that shares the stories we’ve covered about how companies are finding an edge in the competitive hiring landscape.
We call it Beyond Recruiting. It’s free, and it’s available now. It features stories from people and companies across the communities we cover, with real anecdotes and actionable takes on how your favorite companies plan to find their next great hire.

For friends of the show, we released a first edition of the ebook in 2015 as a PDF. Find it now in glorious HTML5, whether you’re on your desktop or on your phone.
We hope you learn something new — and if you have your own unique recruiting ideas and aren’t afraid to share, send them our way. We’d love to feature you.
And a plug for our upcoming NET/WORK jobs fair: we’ll be connecting more than 100 companies with thousands of jobseekers on the East Coast in February and March. It’s an effective, affordable tech recruiting event in your city. Find out how to exhibit at the event today.
