Google names Newark as Delaware’s top tech city

While Wilmington is reveling in DataFox’s announcement that it’s one of the best cities in the country for startups, Newark now has a reason to celebrate, too: Google just named it Delaware’s top tech city. Take that.
The nomination is part of Google’s eCity list for the best tech cities in each of the 50 states, which were chosen based on the tech giant’s AdWords data.
For what it’s worth, the eCity of neighboring Pennsylvania was Erie.

An independent research firm, Ipsos MORI, analyzed the data.
The firm first arranged all U.S. cities by population size. Then it determined each state’s top five cities by looking at which locations had the highest AdWords penetration relative to population size, according to the company’s methodology.
Second, Ipsos calculated a business score for the cities. It looked at a sample of 51 small businesses from each remaining city and assigned them a certain number of points for things like being listed in on online directory, having a social network presence and allowing ecommerce. The highest-scoring city was crowned its state’s eCity.
Google noted Newark’s Delaware Technology Park as an optimal crossroads of the state, the University of Delaware and the private sector converging to research biotech, renewable energy, information science and software engineering.
Google doesn’t have any employees in Delaware, but it and its parent company Alphabet incorporated in the First State in August.
