The Flatiron School is planning a DC expansion

It comes after the coding school was acquired by WeWork. Further details weren't available on the location, but job posts are already up.

Fresh off being acquired by WeWork, the Flatiron School is set to expand to D.C.

“Flatiron School’s next campus will be in D.C., pending regulatory approval,” the company said at a D.C. landing page on its website. “Stay tuned for more information about job opportunities, upcoming courses and community events.”

Info on when it will open and where it will be located wasn’t immediately available. But some of those job opportunities are already available, with listings for a web development instructor, community coordinator and admissions lead also appearing.

At its location in New York, the Flatiron School offers web and iOs development courses designed to train students for dev jobs in 12-15 weeks.

“We’re honored to have the opportunity to impact more students’ lives and continue shaping the future of education by expanding Flatiron School’s on-campus offerings beyond New York,” Flatiron School CEO Adam Enbar said in a statement. “We’re absolutely thrilled to call Washington, D.C. – a top emerging tech hub – home to our next campus.”

Our sister site Technical.ly Brooklyn reported that the coding school was planning expansion following its acquisition by coworking company WeWork. It also reported that the Flatiron School reached a $375,000 settlement with the New York Attorney General’s office in the weeks before the deal was announced for operating without a license and making misleading employment and salary claims about its graduates. The company has since obtained a license, and the settlement is funding restitution to alums who file complaints with the New York AG’s office.

While the Flatiron School would be new to D.C., WeWork is a familiar presence. The company currently has 10 spaces operating in the District.

“WeWork employees and members will now have access to one of the world’s leading coding academies. As we move forward, WeWork will offer new Flatiron in-person courses in new locations and online through new models and new channels,” WeWork CEO Adam Neumann said in a blog post announcing the Flatiron School acquisition.

The expansion news for one coding school comes a month after the closing of The Iron Yard’s campuses, including in D.C. That company’s board cited the “challenges of a nascent market” in its decision to close. Dev Bootcamp is also set to close by the end of the year. The moves led the New York Times to declare a “reality check” for the industry. However, that article cited Flatiron School as a bright spot due to its online course offerings. The strategy of pairing coding schools with coworking is also gaining steam.

Programs including General Assembly and Coding Dojo also remain active in the D.C. area.
