Learn drone basics at this PANMA event

Please, please don’t be one of those people who think they can just buy a drone and start zipping it around all willy-nilly.

That seems to be the main pitch behind PANMA’s upcoming event: Drones 101: Essentials for New Pilots in Philly, happening Sept. 28 at the University of Pennsylvania.

Local pilot and instructor Edward Pachell of aerial photography company Flying Bronco, will cover the basics of UAV operation: from buying the right kind, best Philly spots to fly a drone and the intricacies of getting FAA certification.

“Drone’s are playing a larger part in media and technology from entertainment to support efforts to filming and delivery of products,” said Grue and Bleen CEO Josh Silverbauer, who also wears the hat of VP at PANMA, one of Philly’s oldest meetup groups. “There is a lot of uncertainty around the rules, regulations and reason behind the use drones. In hosting the event, PANMA wanted to create a forum to explore the positive uses of drones, and to debunk the stigma around them.”

It’s of note that Penn has been steadily raising its profile as a hub for drone research and related startups, as seen in the uptick of companies in that space posted up at its tech-transfer center, Pennovation. There’s also a cool drone cage outside the Grays Ferry space.
