The Delaware College of Art & Design’s summer Pre-College Program is known for helping prospective art students gear up for portfolio reviews and freshman foundation classes while delivering a taste of college life.
Olivia Kwiatkowski of Smyrna spent a week at DCAD’s Pre-College Program the summer before her senior year at Caravel Academy. Last year, she represented DCAD’s Class of ’17 as valedictorian before transferring to Pratt Institute in New York to pursue her bachelor’s degree.
“One week,” she said, “showed me the potential I had.”
In the versatile program, students can enroll for college credit or non-credit courses, can commute or live on campus, and may be serious art students on track for arts college or simply interested in making art.
For summer 2018, DCAD is adding two additional Pre-College sessions, all of which will now serve rising high-school sophomores along with rising high-school juniors and seniors.
Cost for a DCAD Pre-College week ranges from $650 for a non-resident, non-credit experience to $1,225 for a resident, college-credit experience. Those enrolling for two weeks of Pre-College will receive a discount of 10 percent. Those enrolling for all three weeks of Pre-College will receive a discount of 15 percent. Scholarships to Pre-College may be awarded to qualified students who apply by the April 30 deadline. Enrollment deadline is June 15.
The College also is launching the inaugural DCAD Summer Camp for kids 13–15.
The Summer Camp will be held for three weeks in June, with a different theme each week:
- June 11–15, “Tour de Art,” focusing on art appreciation
- June 18–22, “Up, Up and Away,” focusing on animation
- June 25–29, “Print It,” focuing on printmaking
Campers can attend one, two or all three weeks. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday (before and aftercare is available). Cost for DCAD Summer Camp is $250 per week. (It’s $300 with before/after care.) Enrollment deadline is June 1.
