Comcast tower unanimously approved by Planning Commission [Comcast Roundup]

“The only criticism: Not enough bicycle parking.”

  • New Comcast tower gets unanimous approval from Planning Commission [PlanPhilly] “The only criticism: Not enough bicycle parking.”
  • Comcast acquisition of Time Warner Cable could undermine CBS deal [LA Times] “The new distribution contract CBS Corp. signed with Time Warner Cable Inc. last summer after a bitter fight could be a casualty of Comcast Corp.‘s proposed acquisition of the pay-TV operator. According to people familiar with the deal, it does not include provisions protecting all the terms of the pact should Time Warner Cable be acquired by a distributor with a sweeter arrangement.”
  • $1.5B in efficiencies: What Comcast-TWC merger might mean for Philly [Newsworks] “Roberts said the deal will also generate about $1.5 billion in operating efficiencies. He wouldn’t elaborate on whether that meant job cuts — except for saying this: ‘It does put a lot of people’s lives and careers [in flux] and there’s uncertainty. And that’s just one of the reasons we always hope the review is as expeditious as possible.'”
  • Comcast-Time Warner doesn’t pass the smell test [Washington Post] “The resulting company would have at least 30 million cable customers, just under 30 percent of the TV market, as well as 38 percent of high-speed Internet customers. It will have virtual monopoly cable control over news and public service programming in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York City and Washington, D.C.”
  • Former FCC Commissioner Warns About Comcast-Time Warner Merger, “Mindless” Media Consolidation [Democracy Now] “While Comcast has claimed the deal will be “pro-consumer,” the group Free Press warns the deal would be a “disaster” for consumers. Analysts predict Comcast will launch a lobbying blitz similar to when it won approval to take over NBCUniversal in 2011.”
  • Comcast Wants To Prevent Cars From Preventing Accidents, Jerks [Jalopnik]
  • Netflix slow on Verizon or Comcast? A VPN might speed up that video [Ars Technica]
  • Comcast seeks Olympic gold as millions watch [CBS] “Fewer viewers are tuning into the Sochi Winter Olympics than to the previous Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C., when many events were televised live to the North American audience. But Sochi’s ratings are trending ahead of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, which like the current competition were mostly shown well after the live events. For  NBC parent Comcast (CMCSA), which spent $4.38 billion in 2011 for the rights to four Olympics and has struggled to earn a profit on them, this is good news.”
