The City is hosting a ‘Hire Hahnemann’ job fair for soon-to-be-displaced employees

In an attempt to aid workers who will soon be displaced by the closing of Hahnemann University Hospital, the City of Philadelphia will hold a job fair with employers across the region that are ready to hire.

The City is partnering with Philadelphia Works, the City’s workforce development board, for the hiring fair, dubbed “Hire Hahnemann,” which will bring companies and soon-to-be-laid-off workers together at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. It’s estimated that about 2,7000 people will lose their jobs in the closing, slated for Sept. 6.

The fair will allow hospital staff to meet directly with local employers and will provide transitional and supportive resources for those losing their jobs, the City said. Those services include resume reviews, skills training, information and resources on unemployment compensation, student loan assistance and healthcare options.

“Given the scope of employment opportunities for a fully functioning health system, employers from industries of all types are being recruited for the event,” the City said in a statement. As of this week, more than 80 companies had registered.

Already on the list of companies that will be present are other healthcare organizations such as Einstein Healthcare Network, Aveanna Healthcare, Doylestown Health and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Companies outside of the healthcare industry include Wells Fargo, Education Works, Parx Casino, FedEx and SEPTA. A City spokesperson said that employers can continue to enroll in the event until July 24.

In addition to Hahnemann’s closure, Philadelphia Works and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry are supporting workers of the Philadelphia Energy Solutions who are facing uncertainty due to the decision to close the refinery after a recent fire.

“We are fully aware of our responsibility to city residents, businesses, and Hahnemann employees and are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of this closure as much as possible,” Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement.

The “Hire Hahnemann” fair will take place Thursday, July 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Convention Center in Ballroom B.
