The importance of working together and supporting one another was echoed over and over at the Baltimore Business Journal’s Tech 10 Awards Thursday night. Well, technically it was the Tech 11.
“We’re especially honored that you stretched the rules a little bit to make it the Tech 11,” Protenus cofounder Robert Lord said while accepting the award on behalf of fellow cofounder Nick Culbertson and himself. “For those of you who know us, of course everyone treats us like a single human being.”
Protenus was among several honorees who stressed the importance of the mentoring they’ve received in Baltimore.
“Being [among] the likes of Jen Meyer and Christy Wyskiel, they helped us get off the ground and get running so it’s awesome to be recognized in the same venue as them,” Culbertson said of his fellow honorees.
Here’s the full list of winners:

  • Jen Meyer, CEO, Betamore
  • Eric Bryant, Attorney, Rifkin, Livingston, Levitan & Silver LLC
  • James Foster, CEO, ZeroFOX
  • Ron Gula, CEO, Tenable Security
  • Ramani Duraiswami, founder, VisiSonics
  • Margaret Roth, cofounder, Yet Analytics
  • Christy Wyskiel, senior adviser to the president, Johns Hopkins University
  • Robert Wallace, CEO, Bithgroup Technologies Inc.
  • Robert Lord and Nick Culbertson, cofounders, Protenus
  • Kevin Barnes, owner, Harbor Designs and Manufacturing

Johns Hopkins’ Wyskyiel then returned Culbertson’s acknowledgement when she accepted her award later in the evening.
“You have really helped me on this journey,” she said, referring to the Protenus team and some of the other honorees. “We want to break silos together and do great things.”
Culbertson said the night reminded him why he cofounded Protenus in the first place.
“It’s really encouraging to think back to taking time off of med school and now focusing on giving impact to Baltimore and building out the tech community,” he said.
