Say hello to the next Philly Startup Leaders president: Brock Weatherup.
Weatherup, 43, of Wayne, Pa., will lead the volunteer-run founder network, which is largely seen as the heartbeat of the city’s tech entrepreneurship scene. He’s yet another PSL president who has a big exit on his resume: He sold his MontCo company Pet360 to PetSmart for more than $130 million last fall. (PSL’s two past presidents include Rick Nucci and Bob Moul, both of whom were part of Boomi’s exit to Dell in 2010.)
Weatherup is now angel investing, most recently in local consumer engagement startup SocialLadder, and helping run a New York City accelerator for Israeli tech companies.
“I feel lucky and very excited to pick up the great work that the previous presidents Rick Nucci and Bob Moul [have done],” Weatherup wrote in an email, “to join an organization that works to facilitate and encourage the Philly startup ecosystem that is building great momentum.”
PSL president Nucci will announce Weatherup’s appointment this evening at National Mechanics, during the happy hour for PSL’s annual Founder Factory conference.
Nucci, who served a two-year term, said the timing was right for him to step down from the presidency. When he started as president, his company, Guru, was still in stealth mode. Now, it’s post-Series A and working to gain traction. He doesn’t have as much time to focus on PSL anymore, he said to us during Founder Factory.
Still, he said owes a lot to the group and the presidency, which helped him get more involved with the local tech scene.
In that respect, he said, “I feel enlightened.”
Weatherup is similar to Nucci in that respect — he has mentored companies through DreamIt Ventures and PSL, but he’s not yet a common face on the Philly tech circuit, the way Nucci has become. Nucci is hard to miss because of his trademark long hair, his self-deprecating humor and his constant good-naturedness.
