Amazon is bringing another solar project to Northern Virginia

The tech giant announced that NoVa is one of three regions where it plans to build new energy projects, part of its goal to run on 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Amazon continues to expand in the Northern Virginia region, this time in the renewable energy space.

The tech giant announced Tuesday that it is investing in renewable energy solar projects located in southwest Florida, Illinois and NoVa. Amazon is also building a solar farm internationally in Spain. This endeavor is part of the tech giant’s plan to reach 80% renewable energy by 2024 and 100% renewable energy by 2030.

This renewable energy project will be Amazon’s ninth in the Commonwealth, and the company reports that the three new U.S. projects combined are expected to generate almost 700,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy annually.

“Earlier this year, we announced The Climate Pledge, setting a goal to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net zero carbon by 2040,” said Amazon Director of Sustainability Kara Hurst in a statement. “We’re committed to investing in renewable energy as a critical step toward addressing our carbon footprint globally.”

These new projects join Amazon’s portfolio of over 70 renewable energy projects, which include wind and solar farms and solar rooftop installments. The three new renewable energy projects will specifically be used to power Amazon’s fulfillment network in Europe and Amazon Web Services data centers once completed, a press release states.

“I applaud Amazon for their investment in renewable energy projects in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Virginia Sen. Mark Warner. “This solar energy project will generate 80 megawatts of renewable energy, which will help lead to a cleaner and healthier environment.”
