Alarm.com welcomes 10 technologists into its yearlong apprenticeship program

Alarm.com is launching a tech apprenticeship program with support from the GO Virginia initiative.

Launched in 2003, Alarm.com is a publicly traded tech company based in Vienna that provides cloud-based home monitoring services. GO Virginia is an economic development initiative that supports programs working to prepare people for high-paying jobs. This apprenticeship program is the first of its kind supported by the statewide initiative.

The year-long apprenticeship will encompass a 10-week technical training at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and a nine-month job training portion with Alarm.com. Selected apprentices will receive compensation including full benefits and earn certifications during the duration of the program.

There have been 10 selected apprentices to be a part of the inaugural Alarm.com apprenticeship class. This class includes three professionals from the military community; Alarm.com worked closely with the Northern Virginia Technology Council’s Veterans Employment Initiative to recruit them to apply.

“There are more than 100,000 job openings right now in Northern Virginia, half of them in technical fields, so the need for connecting companies with talent is obvious,” said Victor Hoskins, president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA), in a statement. “I congratulate Alarm.com, Northern Virginia Community College, the Northern Virginia Technology Council and the state government for taking the lead on the kind of collaboration the region needs to meet the growing demand for tech-savvy workers.”

Victoria Schillinger, VP of human resources at Alarm.com, said that the company’s apprenticeship program stemmed from Alarm.com’s participation on the Consumer Technology Association’s Apprenticeship Council. The new program is also part of the company’s commitment to creating employment and professional education opportunities for aspiring technologists in Fairfax County and Virginia.

In partnership with Virginia Chief Workforce Development Advisor Dr. Megan Healy, NOVA and the FCEDA, the apprentices were celebrated at an event on Feb. 21, which also featured a discussion on talent acquisition and meeting the growing job demand in the region.

“Apprenticeships are a proven pathway for workers to develop 21st century skills while receiving a paycheck,” Healy said. “Alarm.com’s partnership with Northern Virginia Community College is a model for other business and education partnerships throughout the state.”
