7 startups we met at DC Tech Meetup, cybersecurity edition

The October 17 meetup put a focus on a growing area of the D.C. tech community. Here's a look at the companies who offered demos.

Technical.ly’s Editorial Calendar explores a different topic each month. The October 2018 topic is cybersecurity.

October’s edition of DC Tech Meetup featured companies working in cybersecurity. The event took place during Cyberscoop‘s second annual DC Cyberweek and National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

“This was our first ever cybersecurity edition. Given that cyber is a unique and rapidly growing space within the DC Tech ecosystem, we were excited to explore it with our community,” Selina McPherson, a DC Tech Meetup organizer, told Technical.ly.

On October 17 at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, employees from seven companies demoed cybersecurity products and discussed how they are helping customers stay more secure. Let’s take a look:

Endgame

This company offers an endpoint protection platform for enterprise Endgame’s software is designed to stop attackers from stealing data. “Our mission is to protect the world’s data from attack,” VP of Engineering Tony Meehan said during his presentation. Founded in 2008 and based in Arlington, Va., the company has a zero breach tolerance and was the only D.C. startup named to Forbes’ Cloud 100 List this year.

WireWheel

An AWS tech partner, WireWheel provides a software-as-a-service solution that supports all phases of a global privacy management and compliance program. Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Arlington, Va., the company combines machine learning, data science and cloud computing to help companies meet new data privacy and compliance challenges while still protecting their customer’s data.

Ostendio

The Arlington, Va.–based company uses a cloud-based cybersecurity and information management platform called MyVCM. Founded in 2013, the platform was created to help companies build and manage information security compliance programs, reduce the cost of vendor management, track and manage asset plans and more. The platform is supposed to be an easy to use one-stop-shop to streamline a company’s cybersecurity needs.

Dark Cubed

The Alexandria, Va.–based startup looks to provide simple and intuitive cybersecurity services. Founded three years ago, the startup created a platform for companies to simply create an account through its web app where they can send data from their firewall to Dark Cubed to receive real time security, visibility, and automated protection. The company provides the SaaS platform as a tool to use.

Thresher

Cofounder and CEO Rebecca Fair said the company provides a platform for data scientists to label training data to teach and tune machine-learning models. The computer software company that specializes in text data was born from a team of data scientists from Harvard three years ago. Fair presented about the company’s Quickcode software that allows companies to code messy text into clean categories. When Fair finished her presentation, the first question she got from an attendee was: “Where can I get it?”

Trustwire

The company created a platform for users to securely send information via email. “Trustwire is an easy to use and secure solution for you to share your most important data,” said Hugh Hall, founder and CEO. Hall walked through how to use Trustwire, which allows users to send information that can only be accessed by the user(s) it is sent to using end-to-end encryption technology. You don’t need an account to send something securely, just a secured link through the platform.

TDI

The D.C. company provides various cybersecurity services but specifically presented a featured products, CnSight. With 18 years in the game, the company launched this product to close the gap between cybersecurity threats reported and understood to be true for a company. The product provides complete visibility into a company’s cybersecurity reality.

The next DC Tech Meetup will be held on Nov. 5 at The Washington Post.
