The $40 million, 10-story tower on STAR campus means more space for startups

What will soon be 10-stories tall and home to classrooms, research special and commercial shops? The University of Delaware’s upcoming tower on STAR Campus in Newark.
Construction is underway for the tower, and it’ll spurt up on the STAR Campus (which some might remember as the former home of the Chrysler plant). UD picked up that land with a major acquisition in 2009, and it’s since seen the large build-up of space used by both the university and Delaware-based companies. Construction on this tower is set to be finished by mid-2018, according to this story in the Wilmington News Journal.
We recently toured the DTP@STAR‘s startup incubator spaceMike Bowman, president of the DTP and associate director of the Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships at UD, told us then that the upcoming tower will be home to the College of Health Sciences. That department currently shares the DTP@STAR building, so their impending vacancy will allow DTP to spread its presence.
That means more space for more development-stage startups.
If you routinely drive around Newark, you can expect to see the frame of the building heading up this spring. Real estate developer Ernie Delle Donne told the News Journal that “preliminary site work” has already started. He expects to “start going vertical in April, and it should be topped out by homecoming.”
The university will continue its push onto southern Newark, and the startup, tech and science fields in Delaware will have new spaces to get to work. We’ll be covering more of what’s coming from the tower in the future.
