We’re in the thick of summer, and while it can be tempting to stay inside and avoid August’s hot, muggy days, you’d also miss all the sunshine and activity you can’t get in the colder seasons.

The tech community has lots going on this month, from networking events to info sessions to workshops for technologists and founders.

The University of Maryland BioPark is celebrating women in biotech, the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia is hosting a gathering for young professionals, and Research Triangle Park is highlighting energy innovations in North Carolina. Innovation Works and TEDCO are providing opportunities to meet investors. The Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center has a series of free online classes for founders and is accepting applications for its Milestone Circles 12-week program. The future is looking so bright, you might want to put on sunglasses to explore this roundup.

  • Philly Builds AI Founder Series: Your AI Isn’t the Product. The User Experience Is — “The AI startups actually winning aren’t the ones with the flashiest tech… they are the ones that deeply understand who they’re building for and the pain points their users experience. In this talk, Beth Garrison argues that the true competitive advantage in AI isn’t what happens under the hood; it’s understanding the lived experience of users. We’ll explore how to uncover real user needs before writing a line of code, why a compelling AI demo may not translate into a successful product, and what it takes to design AI features that people trust, adopt, and keep using.” Hosted by Philly Builds AI and Ben Franklin Technology Partners.
  • Storytelling for Impact — “Every time you step onto a stage, into a boardroom, or in front of a camera, you have an opportunity to do more than share information—you have an opportunity to shift the conversation. • MIC Marketing Lab: Customer Decision Journey Mapping — “Most marketing gets built around what a business wants to say, not around how the customer is actually thinking. In this session, marketing strategist Moni Oloyede breaks down the customer decision journey — what your audience believes their problem is, what they’re already trying to solve it, and what’s quietly keeping them stuck. Then she puts it into practice: real MIC members get their marketing put on the hot seat, live, so you see the framework applied to an actual business, not a hypothetical.” Hosted by Howard County Economic Development Authority.

Thursday, Aug. 20

  • What Happens Before and After the Pitch — “The pitch is only one moment in the fundraising journey. Long before founders step into the room, investors are evaluating market dynamics, reviewing materials, researching the team, and deciding whether the opportunity merits deeper consideration. After the meeting ends, founders need to manage follow-up conversations, partner discussions, due diligence, and relationship building. These factors often determine whether a pitch ultimately becomes an investment. The Nasdaq Center is excited to be joined by Rachel Baruch, Partner at Growth Warrior Capital, for a strategic session designed to give high-growth founders an insider’s view of the fundraising process beyond the pitch itself.” Hosted by the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center.
  • RTP180: Energy — “This month we are bringing in the experts to present their unique take on the innovations, research, technology, and creatives that are impacting Energy, especially those working here in North Carolina. • AI Automation: Scaling Your Startup with Intelligent Workflows — As your startup grows, so do the demands on your time. Repetitive administrative tasks, content creation, customer communications, and project management can quickly consume valuable hours that would be better spent on strategic growth. The founders who scale most effectively aren’t simply working harder — they’re building intelligent systems that automate routine work while keeping people focused on high-value decisions. The Nasdaq Center is excited to be joined by Courage Kimber — AI Trainer, Prompt Engineer, and Workflows Solutions Specialist — for a hands-on session designed to help founders leverage accessible AI tools to streamline operations and increase productivity.” Hosted by the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center.

  • Profit Centers: What’s Actually Making You Money — “Revenue tells only part of the story. As companies grow, adding customers, products, or services doesn’t always translate into greater profitability. The most successful founders know how to identify which parts of the business create lasting value, which quietly drain resources, and where to focus investments to maximize long-term growth. The Nasdaq Center is excited to be joined by Erin Pelicano, Founder Advisor at The Venture Project and Entrepreneurial Leadership Strategist, for a strategic session designed for high-growth founders looking to build more profitable, resilient businesses.” Hosted by the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center.
