At this year’s CMA Music Festival, 40,000 spectators fired up the Wham City Lights app on their smartphones, hoisted their phones into the air and watched as their phone screens blinked in technicolor.
Now the app-supported startup, founded by a crew that includes electronica artist Dan Deacon, is a year old. It has been used at major outdoor music festivals, including the aforementioned CMA festival, as well as by country artist Brad Paisley and at Deacon’s own shows.
The crux of the Wham City Lights technology is ultrasonic frequencies. Without a stable WiFi connection, Wham City Lights’ pre-programmed light shows are transmitted to smartphones at concerts through the speakers on stage and the microphones in each person’s phone, as Technically Baltimore reported.
