This Week in Jobs: Going Up Edition

Stair Masters

The DMV is back to being … convenient. After eight years and $176 million, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced last week that it’s finally finished installing and repairing 145 new escalators and refurbishing another 153. Hat tip to Mitch Hedberg, who recognized that broken escalators simply become stairs.

The Metro is home to what it calls the “largest fleet of escalators in North America,” and while they may not be quite as new as the vaunted 7000 Series train, the escalators’ average age — once 27 years old — is now a sprightly 9.9. Things are looking up.

The News

Dog ears need protection, too: Zeteo Tech, Inc., in Skyesville, Maryland, announced last week that it’s developed the Canine Auditory Protection System to help prevent hearing loss in military dogs. The project, backed by U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command, will make sure Sgt. Fido’s ears aren’t injured in training, during transportation or in the field. The device, which resembles a swaddle, isn’t yet available for civilian doggos (draft-doggers?), but now you know what Fifi was searching for on Cyber Monday. If you’re looking for a small, independent-minded team with a focus on growth and development, SmartLogic may be just the place. In a leafy office in Baltimore, its 12-person team develops custom web and mobile applications that have found a broad audience from tech startups to Fortune 500 firms. Developer Stephanie Vizzi tells Technical.ly that there’s also a strong emphasis on learning: “We’re allowed a long leash to develop in our own way, to write code in a way that reflects how we think and what we know. We’re encouraged to keep learning, studying and working on your own projects.” Read more here.
