3D-printed carmaker brings ‘Mobifactory’ to Crystal City

Local Motors, an Arizona-based company that makes on-demand, 3D-printed cars (Editor’s note: Wut?), has rolled out a mini mobile factory in Crystal City.
The “Mobifactory” is a 53-foot-long shipping container that makes and assembles electric drift trikes, a crowdsourced car called the Rally Fighter and 3D-printed cars.
Throughout the summer, the container will offer workshops and access to the 3D printer. There will also be monthly slalom races and drift trike tours.
“It’s an ambassador for manufacturing,” said Local Motors CEO and cofounder Jay Rogers. “We can use it pretty nimbly to show people where we’re going.”
Crystal City is the Mobifactory’s first destination. In the fall, Local Motors plans to open a 23,000-square-foot sales and demonstration facility at National Harbor.
