Shaun Tyndall got his start in web and network design back in the ’90s, just when Napster was becoming popular.
After studying at the University of Delaware and Wilmington University, Tyndall figured it was the right time to make a career of his own, instead of waiting for a 9-to-5 job.
That’s where Inclind comes in.
Founded by Tyndall in a college dorm room in 1999, the web design and development company based out of Georgetown now operates as “a boutique Drupal shop with gnarly problem-solving skills,” according to its website. The firm’s nine-person staff features developers, designers and Tyndall’s wife as controller.
While many web-based companies center themselves in Wilmington, Tyndall says the choice to work out of Georgetown was strategic.
“It’s awesome to live and raise a family in a destination area while being within a short drive to three major metros,” Tyndall said. “You just have to work a little harder to connect with others and not become ‘bored.’”
Here’s how he does it.

How did you end up working at Inclind?
I was surrounded by young tech entrepreneurs during my freshman year at the University of Delaware. It was the days of Napster and it just seemed like starting a business was the natural step to take. During my college years it really was just a better option than searching for a job and once I graduated it had grown into something that could actually pay the mortgage. So, basically it’s a combination of right-place-right-time and luck.
What is your background in the tech/creative world?
My background in web design/development started in the mid-’90s (as a teenager). I earned Web Design & Network Design BS from Wilmington University. Also, I’ve directed a web agency for 15 years.
What are the benefits of working in Southern Delaware?
It’s awesome to live and raise a family in destination area while being within a short drive to three major metros.
I tend to be very positive living here so it’s tough to identify a pitfall. It’s all about your expectations. If anything, I’d have to say the winter time can be a pitfall (especially for young tech/creative folks). You just have to work a little harder to connect with others and not become “bored.”
What’s the first thing you do every day at work?
Try to organize my inbox. It’s tough keeping track of all the communication bouncing between family, staff, clients and general noise that makes it in.
How often do you check your e-mail?
Pretty much constantly.
What’s it like working with your staff?
Challenging. Most days I’m learning something new from them so I have to stay on my toes.
What is the most gratifying part of your job?
Seeing other people succeed.
When you need to take a break, what are you turning to?
Reddit. Twitter. Back to reddit. Pretty much that.
What’s your design and computer gear (program preference/ones you use the most, Mac or PC) ?
We outfit our team with MacBook Pros and Thunderbolt displays. My life is spent within Google Apps, JIRA/Confluence, Photoshop/Illustrator and PhpStorm.
What’s one way in which you believe your day-to-day work is better now than it has been in the past? Is there something you do now (or don’t do) that has made a big difference?
Using HipChat has been a big improvement. We’ve been able to integrate our issue tracking system (JIRA) and other systems with HipChat to see real-time activities being conducted by our team (and invite our clients into the loop). This has provided a significant improvement in awareness / communication between everyone in our team.
