Local engineer Troy Crosby loves the D.C. tech scene, but he wishes it were a bit more consolidated.
So he created DC Tech Cal, a nifty calendar that aggregates the events from 16 different meetups and organizations.
Here’s what inspired him to spend the weekend immersed in Ruby on Rails: Crosby works for the news aggregating app Trove (formerly WaPo Labs) which is located in the same building as 1776 and General Assembly. He kept being tempted by events he couldn’t make.
I often leave work at the end of the day and see a event sign-in booth in the building lobby. Sometimes I would think “Oh I wonder what the event is” or “I wonder if that would have been interesting to check out,” but at that point I’m on my way out of the building and heading home.
I never kept much track of such events because keeping tabs on them involves checking multiple sources that independently list only the events that they are associated with.
Crosby uses Kimono to scrape the websites daily, and is running the website through Ruby on Rails.
