Map of local Twitter users shows ‘Smalltimore’ exists: Dave Troy [VIDEO]

Three distinct Twitter communities exist in Baltimore, including one based solely on support for Ravens football.

Programmer and entrepreneur Dave Troy has been mapping Baltimore’s Twitter user base since 2007 to answer three questions:

  1. What are people doing on Twitter in Baltimore?
  2. How is Baltimore plugged in?
  3. How can we use it to effect change?

He presented preliminary findings during Baltimore’s TEDx City 2.0 event on Sept. 20 during Innovation Week. In the below video, Troy shows that three distinct Twitter communities exist in Baltimore, including one based solely on support for Ravens football and another spanning north-to-south in the city that he dubbed “Smalltimore.”

While Troy is still completing his Twitter mapping, he said via e-mail something that probably won’t shock people familiar with Baltimore’s history: the city is “super-segregated and it shows up clearly on Twitter, in ways that it doesn’t for other cities.”
