Couchbase holds Philly Developer Day to grow local presence

Couchbase doesn't have much of a local presence in Philly, unlike some of its competitors like MongoDB, with its Philadelphia MongoDB User Group, and Riak, with its Philadelphia Riak Meetup. Holding a Developer Day is one way to get the local community using your product.

No Couchbase Philly Meetup Group? No problem.

The company behind its popular eponymous document database software service will come to you.

Silicon Valley-based Couchbase landed in Philly last week on an East Coast tour, also hitting Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, to hold a “Developer Day,” an all-day event where Couchbase instructors teach developers how to use the open source database that’s used by big-name brands like Adidas, Comcast and Starbucks.

Marty Schoch, one of the lead instructors, went over some of the basics of Couchbase.

MongoDB holds similar events in Philly and also gets involved in the community by sponsoring awards at hackathons like PennApps. Basho, Riak’s parent company, has done the same, by sponsoring events like Philly ETE.

According to Couchbase’s website companies such as Adidas, AOL, Cisco, Comcast, eBay, Orbitz, Starbucks and hundreds of other companies use Couchbase servers for their web and mobile applications.

After spending a day at Penn teaching Philly developers how to use Couchbase, what was the team’s impression of Philly’s developer community?

Philly developers are more creative than those in Washington, D.C., said Couchbase lead instructor Robin Johnson, adding that the developers in Washington, D.C. mostly work for the government.
