Turns out that Delaware’s most eminent parenting nerds, Dan and Lynsey Larson, went and moved to Philly last March, their two adorable kids in tow.
As the couple settled into their new town due to Dan’s new job at Drexel University, the first question from the caffeine-obsessed couple was: where’s the good coffee?
Naturally, they found the answer in data.
“Sure, we could have simply done a survey or asked some people we know in the area, but that’s crazy talk,” Larson wrote in a blog post. So he took to the dev console and pulled all the Yelp ratings for Philly coffee shops, transposed the data onto a Tableau dashboard and voilà:
var divElement = document.getElementById(‘viz1499694531058’); var vizElement = divElement.getElementsByTagName(‘object’)[0]; vizElement.style.width=’654px’;vizElement.style.height=’1229px’; var scriptElement = document.createElement(‘script’); scriptElement.src = ‘https://public.tableau.com/javascripts/api/viz_v1.js’; vizElement.parentNode.insertBefore(scriptElement, vizElement);
The first takeaway: University City has all the best-ranked coffee spots on Yelp, likely due to all the caffeine-crazed students in the area. Also interesting: the raw numbers: There are 816 coffee establishments in Philadelphia, including 94 Dunkin’ Donuts and 48 Starbucks.
