Geeks on a Train was an event in which technologists, entrepreneurs and other self-identified geeks all plan to board the same train at the same time as an unorthodox networking event. Often there is a shared destination but often the train itself has programming. The goal of these informal community events are often to convey proximity of various communities of people, for example along the Northeast corridor of the United States.
There were early Geeks on a Train events held in April 2010 originating in Singapore and in May 2012 originating in Baltimore. In fall 2012, Technical.ly and the Greater Baltimore Technology Council partnered on another.
The Geeks on a Train idea is a play on the Geeks on a Plane project from 500 Startups, which takes early stage tech companies to visit another community.
