This Week in Jobs: Green phase, red alert

Anyone wanna buy a 234-year-old newspaper?

Hi! You’re reading the Pittsburgh edition of This Week in Jobs (TWIJ), a weekly newsletter written by our team at in partnership with InnovatePGH and the Pittsburgh Innovation District. Each week we put together for you a slate of news and fresh job opportunities in the ‘burgh. If you’re not already subscribed, you can do so here.

Happy Tuesday, TWIJers. Hopefully you’ve already gotten wind of the baffling actions from the Post-Gazette’s management to sideline two Black journalists on staff from covering the historic protests happening in the area, and its removal of news stories about those protests from its website on Friday.

TWIJ is one of our fun sides, but is also an organization with a newsroom that upholds journalistic principles of independence, fairness and reporting the truth. We’re outraged to see the journalists of a fabled institution like the Post-Gazette be blocked from doing their jobs by their own management team — and doing so by targeting Black journalists no less.

Meanwhile, as we’re witnessing generational social change play out in the streets, Pittsburghers were also able to go to restaurants and meet in larger groups under Gov. Tom Wolf’s “green phase” order. Lest we forget about the pandemic we’re facing, there’s a sliver of good news: The worst fears of the public health threat have abated, at least for the moment.

The News

Scrap those lunch plans! Pittsburgh Robotics Network will host a webinar at noon today (Tuesday June 9) on how to run a robotics company from outside the office. Register here.

Argo AI closed on its $2.6 billion deal with Volkswagen, another showing of big carmakers becoming bedfellows with the various AV firms either based or operating in the Strip District.

The Pittsburgh Business Times captured scenes in the area of what newly opened storefronts looked like under the green phase.

UPMC’s chief of emergency medicine said that Pittsburghers were statistically more likely to get in a car accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike than to get COVID-19 from someone not displaying symptoms, which is … good?

Read about a third, quieter COVID-19 vaccine effort from University of Pittsburgh researchers, who are not necessarily gunning to be the first on the market with this one.

The Jobs

Wonder what’s like to grill in the backyard on your lunch break? These jobs are remote:

The End

Enjoy but stay safe in the green phase. Next week TWIJ will be back with a whole new set of jobs, as always.

If you want to check on new jobs in the mid-Atlantic region, go ahead and sift through’s jobs board any time. See you next week.
