I know, I know, I can’t believe we made it this far into summer without talking about “Barbie,” and yet here we are.
Poised to be the biggest blockbuster of the year (it’s quickly besting “The Super Mario Brothers Movie”), “Barbie” is the highest-grossing release for a woman director. Also, in its fourth-week post-release, it’s still top of the box office by a wide margin. Talk about staying power.
The Mattel-based property has become a signifier of people willing to return to theaters post-COVID. Just when we thought movie theaters were dying out, they came roaring back.
If anything, the success of “Barbie” might be a lesson in expecting the unexpected. That goes for new opportunities, too.
