This app takes makes it easier to understand medical conversations with your healthcare provider

When you’re in the midst of an emotionally exhausting health issue, running from one doctor’s appointment to the next, it can feel nearly impossible to remember the details of each new diagnosis, procedure and prescription.

Watching a family member struggle through that very experience inspired cardiologist Dr. Shiv Rao, M.D., with colleagues Sandeep Konam and Dr. Florian Metze, PhD., to create Abridge — an app that records, transcribes and breaks down complicated conversations with doctors and nurses, helping people stay on top of their health.

Eleven members of Abridge’s small, nimble team are based in Pittsburgh, with two in India, though currently everyone works remotely. Its agile workstyle has enabled Abridge to evolve quickly, such as it did in reaction to COVID-19 when creating enhanced telehealth services to reflect patient needs during the pandemic.

There’s much more room for innovation when it comes to helping patients navigate the healthcare system. As Abridge continues to tackle these challenges, it is looking for mission-minded technologists interested in doing the same.
