This Week in Jobs: Meeting the moment

The anger and violence we all witnessed in news reports or in person the last few days cannot be compartmentalized away from our workplaces or our professional lives, as convenient that may be and has been in the past.

Here at Technical.ly, we’re reporting on these issues and working to support our communities, including a piece by CEO Christopher Wink directed at business leaders — particularly white leaders — urging them to acknowledge directly the emotional weight employees may be feeling right now and make sure there is space in their company’s culture to talk about systemic racism and enduring injustices.

As Wink wrote, “This is white people’s mess. These are not radical issues. These are central, mainstream, urgent human rights issues.”

To that end, if you’re fearful of saying the wrong thing or doing more harm than good, Wink’s article links to worthwhile resources and includes sound advice of his own on what you can do to mitigate those risks. And for some extra motivation, you can find the words of several black tech leaders in Philadelphia calling for local leaders to “do better.”

The tech community, as we often call this industry, did not start the phenomenon of racism, nor did it have any direct involvement in the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

Indeed, new tech advancements, like streaming video, helped make this most recent reckoning possible. But it’s also true that tech-fueled changes to our national and regional economies have widened racial inequities, and many of the consequences of our changing world have gone unanswered or ignored.

Hopefully, this moment can serve as a renewed call to tech leaders and investors alike to disrupt and innovate in new and compelling ways, even ones as simple as how we bring humanity to the workplace so the existence of racism isn’t ignored. Consider Vinetta Project DC Director Dawn Myers’ words: “The tech industry is a powerful force for change, and we can no longer ignore the pleas of Black and other underrepresented groups for support. It’s time to act swiftly and without hesitation.”

• The AV world keeps self-chugging along, and Argo AI is searching for a Senior Software Engineer to join its Onboard Accelerators team.
• Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute is looking to add a Software Architect for its initiative around developing tools for the newest software and AI tech
• Two95 International is on the hunt for a Full Stack .Net Developer with a couple years under their belt.
• Another full-stacker: RIMSYS wants its own Full Stack Software Engineer to join its Agile development team.
