For the last few years now, Fortune magazine’s list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in the country has included a handful of the same Philly-area companies.

And, well, it seems this year isn’t any different — Comcast, SAP and Power Home Remodeling all made the list again. Wawa competitor Sheetz, based in Altoona, is the only other Pennsylvania-based company to make the 2021 list.

This year’s list debuts in the wake of more than a year of COVID-19 shutdowns, working from home and biz pivots. The ranking was based on surveys of half a million employees on issues of trustworthiness, caring and fairness in a time of crisis, as well as employees’ physical, emotional, and financial health and the company’s broader community impact. Fortune also changed its essay question to focus on actions taken specifically in response to the challenges of 2020.

“The takeaway seems clear: Businesses that treat employees well during the toughest of times will attract talent, even when the war for talent heats up,” Fortune wrote.

In 2021, Comcast ranked at No. 21, up many spots from its ranking at No. 64 last year. The magazine called out its surge in demand for both entertainment and connectedness, noting the 1,000 new Wi-Fi-enabled “Lift Zones” Comcast is in the process of adding across the U.S. Comcast currently employs 168,000 people, and this is the company’s fourth year on the list.

SAP, with its North American headquarters in Newtown Square, ranked at No. 29, up from its spot at No. 59 last year. Fortune touted the enterprise software company’s no-job-losses pledge throughout the pandemic, adding nearly 2,010 employees in North America instead. It’s the company’s fifth year on the list, with a total of 22,240 U.S. employees.

“What makes [this] particularly special is that it’s largely based on ratings/feedback from a cross-section of our employees about the workplace culture, leadership trust, camaraderie with coworkers, and pride we take from the work we do day in and day out,” said Lloyd Adams, managing director for SAP’s East Market Unit, in an email when the company placed at No. 28 in 2019. “I think that’s fitting, since at the end of the day, it’s our people who make SAP a great place to work.”

And Power Home Remodeling landed at No. 70, down from No. 50 in 2020, for its fifth time on Fortune’s list. Fortune celebrated that the Chester company brought back all of its staff after a furlough. Power has 2,475 U.S. employees.
