Patient transportation startup Roundtrip gets a new partnership amid year of growth

Old City’s Roundtrip, makers of an on-demand transportation platform for the healthcare space, will partner with Madison, Wisconsin-based healthcare data platform Redox to improve the startup’s patient experience, the Philly company said Wednesday.

Roundtrip was founded in 2016 with the mission of connecting patients, care managers and relatives or friends with a way to book and pay for non-emergency medical transportation options. It’s essentially rideshare for medical transportation needs.

The deal comes less than a year after the company announced a $5.1 million Series A in May 2019, with plans to double its then-headcount of 26, split between Philadelphia and Richmond.

Now, about eight months later, the headcount is up to 36 employees (with plans to hire at least a few more) and the company has a roster of 48 clients, a company spokesperson said. The company also reports a 372% growth in ride volume between 2018 and 2019.

Redox, which makes a full-service integration platform to securely and efficiently exchange healthcare data, specializes in interoperability — connecting and exchanging information.

Through the partnership, Roundtrip’s technology is now more compatible with other healthtech tools, and Redox gets access to Roundtrip’s anonymous patient transportation data such as trip origins, length of trip or special requests, to fill a gap in its system. Redox also ensures Roundtrip is fully interoperable and scalable with all of the healthcare source systems in use across its customer base.

The companies did not disclose the financial details of the deal.

Mark Switaj, Roundtrip’s CEO, recently gave fundraising advice to early-stage companies at Philly Startup LeadersFounder Factory, telling founders that there’s a lot to benefit about being a bigger fish in smaller pond.

The CEO said in a press release that for the new partnership, improving patient outcomes goes far beyond the scheduling and execution of the rideshare services the company is offering.

“It is about understanding a patient’s entire experience across the care continuum and identifying opportunities for optimization when they exist,” Switaj said. “With Redox, we can ensure access to information across myriad IT systems used to deliver and document care to get a comprehensive view of a patient and to ensure their high-quality healthcare journey.”

Redox’s CEO Luke Bonney said that Roundtrip built a solution that was designed with a patient’s needs in mind, not with just those of a single organization.

“By taking this approach, the company has combined previously siloed information to create a system capable of so much more,” Bonney said. “We are honored to partner with Roundtrip and look forward to helping them continue to realize their vision and make healthcare better.”
