Hear from Kickstarter cofounder Yancey Strickler at Generocity’s ADVANCE conference on Nov. 1

The author of "This Could Be Our Future: A Manifesto for a More Generous World" will speak about making business a tool for change. We're giving away two tickets to Technical.ly members.

Crowdfunding has changed the way people give, in large part because of Kickstarter’s influence.

“It’s made the process something that the public participates in,” the 10-year-old, Brooklyn-based public benefit corporation’s cofounder and former CEO Yancey Stricker told Generocity. “Everyone now has the opportunity and tools to propose ideas and create financial, moral, and communal support around them.”

That directly impacts entrepreneurs looking to fund their ventures or products, of course — but it could also influence philanthropy more broadly.

“This gives grant makers and other traditional givers the ability to not only see what spaces and ideas the public has interest in, it also gives them a window into what areas might be underfunded and allowing them to have a bigger impact in a more needy space,” he said.

Following the release of his book “This Could Be Our Future: A Manifesto for a More Generous World,” in which he proposes making business a tool for change, Strickler is stopping by Harrisburg University’s Philadelphia campus next Friday, Nov. 1, to speak at Technical.ly’s sister site’s inaugural conference, ADVANCE by Generocity presented by Knight Foundation.

Generocity’s editor, Sabrina Vourvoulias, will moderate the panel “Envision a Future Driven by You” discussing the intersection of culture, technology and social impact, featuring Stickler and:

  • Markita Morris-Louis, founding chief strategy officer, Compass Working Capital
  • Tiffany Tavarez, VP of community relations, Wells Fargo

The conference also includes panels and presentations led by local social impact leaders Anuj Gupta (the GM of Reading Terminal Market), Vanessa BriggsPeter Gonzales, Manuel Portillo and Stephanie Sun.

The day is targeted at nonprofit professionals — so if that’s you, please do grab a ticket now. Not you? Consider the growing awareness that business can (and indeed, should) value more than the bottom line.

Tickets start at $100. Interested in free tickets? (Of course you are.) We have two to give away to Technical.ly members: Become one and email julie@technical.ly to say you want ’em.
