Philly tech leaders are on the hunt for new talent

A report on tech hiring from Robert Half says that Philadelphia is a good place to be if you're seeking a new position in IT.

Philly is looking pretty good for job seekers in the tech industry, according to a Robert Half Technology report released this week.

The full report, which shows the state of tech hiring across 28 cities, said 60 percent of Philly-based tech leaders that were surveyed plan on expanding their teams in 2019.

In fact, Metro Market Manager for Robert Half Brittany Nisenzon said tech initiatives are on the brains of every company in Philadelphia they’ve spoken to. Business leaders are hoping IT talent can help adapt their company to the changing environment.

“Technology is such an important part of business that we are seeing the creation of new positions and skillsets,” said Nisenzon. “This year, we are seeing more demand for application development positions, and candidates who can build custom solutions for their organization.”

Here are some of the highlights from the report:

  • Only 36 percent of Philly tech leaders plan on filling solely vacant positions, meaning you can chose your own adventure and create a position based on what a company needs.
  • 91 percent believe it’s hard to find IT talent in the area, so now’s the time to head to LinkedIn for a constant stream of shameless self-promotion.
  • The future might really be freelancing, as 90 percent plan on bringing in project-based IT employees for consulting, particularly busy times, sudden vacancies, unplanned projects that are time-sensitive and any skills that doesn’t already exist internally.
  • These are the top five skills employers are demanding, a slight change from RH’s last report in December:
    1. Cloud security/cybersecurity (not at all surprising considering the recent breach in Baltimore and Philly’s own shutdown of the courts site after a virus)
    2. Cloud architecture
    3. Windows administration/mobile development*
    4. Cloud computing
    5. Wireless network development/DevOps*
