A Philly-made love letter to those great multiplayer games of yore like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Party will be go live for the Nintendo Switch on Thursday.

First released for the Xbox ONE in 2016, you can buy PHL Collective’s ClusterPuck 99 on Nintendo’s eShop starting this Thursday, thanks to a partnership between the Center City-based videogame studio and London-based publishing house Coatsink Software.

PHL Collective first began to port the game for Nintendo’s Wii U console in 2017, but since the system was towards the end of its life cycle, the company decided to band together with Coatsink to deliver the game for the Switch, the handheld platform that, per PHL Collective founder Nick Madonna, has “proven to be an amazing platform” for local multiplayer games like ClusterPuck 99.

“This is our love letter to some of the games we grew up playing, those games you’d hang out on a couch and talk smack,” Madonna said. “It’s an arcade/sports/action game. There’s soccer, hockey and a bit of pinball mixed in there.”

The company has a 10-person team based out of the String Theory School building on 16th and Vine. The launch of the game within Nintendo’s online store (for $9.99 in the U.S.) could bode well for the company according to its projections, Madonna said.

“We have some data based on other games and, together with our partners, we put together some projections on what we think the title can do,” the founder said. “We’re hoping things go as well as we know it can so we can hopefully announce a sequel sometime in the future.”
