This Indy Hall exhibit wants to shine a light on the ‘less-visible’ aspects of design

As Old City gets taken over by the Old City Design Crawl on Oct. 6, Indy Hall will unsurprisingly be poppin’.

Philly’s OG coworking spot is playing host to “We Are All Designers: An IndyHall Exhibition,” the culmination of a partnership between Indy Hall and the Center for Architecture and Design, which aims to demystify the design process.

“In the tech sector, when we talk about progress or success we refer to our output: what we ship, our products, our pixels,” said organizer and instructional designer Vanessa Gennarelli. “But in order for one concrete thing to exist, many thoughtful, and often invisible, processes are already in place. This exhibit walks through those design processes, from software to performance.”

Alongside Gennarelli, the exhibit will feature a few familiar designers like Jag Talon, Matt McInerney, Neil Bardhan, Sam Abrams, Abby Fretz, Jessica DiPonziano, Sarah Prasuhn, Nate Johnson and Lansie Sylvia.

(BTW, here’s a list of 12 Philly designers you should know about.)

“I want people to understand design as something larger that pixel-pushing: it’s a philosophy, a way of working, of seeing the whole system,” Gennarelli said. “When we obsess about the pixel output, we’re ignoring the voices of users, and the contributions of many hands along the way.”
