Comcast rolls out gigabit internet in five Philly-area counties

In June, the faster internet made a splash in D.C. Now it's Philly's turn.

Comcast subscribers in Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Chester and Delaware counties can now download their cat GIFs faster if they subscribe to the company’s new 1 gigabit-per-second (Gbps) service.

Per the comms giant, the speeds available through the new service will be “among the fastest and most widely available,” according to a statement released Monday.

Jim Samaha, SVP of Comcast’s Freedom Region, said the service will now be available to the company’s 2 million or so customers in Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey. “We have been on a pace of doubling our network capacity every 18 to 24 months, ensuring that we stay well ahead of demand,” said Samaha in a statement.

The company has also launched 1-gigabit service throughout parts of New Jersey and in New Castle County, Delaware. It aims to launch gigabit internet across the region in the coming weeks. It’s part of a broader national rollout happening since last year. Just a few months ago, the gigabit service was rolled out in Washington, D.C.
