Cool class alert: Learn to shield your online activity from the world

If there was ever a time to be shielding your online activity from anyone wishing to peek through the curtains, that time is now.

From rollbacks of old safeguards on data-sharing by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to an uptick in flashy cyberattacks, it’s a crazy time to be online. That’s why, on July 17, South Philly makerspace Hive76 decided to host “crypto hustler” Alison Macrina for a workshop on digital privacy.

Macrina, a digital rights advocate, librarian and founder of the Library Freedom Project is also a core contributor to The Tor Project.

“With the proposed changes in communication policy in this country, net neutrality and FCC leadership, we got to thinking that Hive76 should be more involved in helping to educate folks on this topic,” said Daniel Provenzano, treasurer and board member at the makerspace. “We decided to fly out Alison Macrina to lead a digital privacy workshop.”

The event is open to users of all knowledge levels and will tackle subjects like password security, internet browsing and encryption.
