This is a guest post by Philly Startup Leaders program coordinator Rachel Zydyk.

If there are so many universities in the city, why is it so difficult to connect young talent to startups? There is no shortage of talent at universities in the Northeast, but we think it’s the matchmaking to opportunities at Philadelphia startups that is the biggest barrier. Maybe that’s because of the small startup marketing and HR budget. Or it could be the the lack of startup opportunities posted on university job boards. It could even be that students don’t know where to start looking. Regardless, Philly Startup Leaders has it covered.

To bridge this gap, PSL is relaunching its Start Stay Grow program with a variety of new initiatives, including the 2017 Summer STARTup Fellowship.

The fellowship, which aims to encourage young talent to start their career in the Philly startup scene by increasing awareness of opportunities and the startup community, will kick off this June. Startups can elect to join the fellowship until early February. Applications opening to students Feb. 9.

PSL has partnered with local Philly startups who will have fellows join them for 10 weeks (June 5 to August 18). During this time, three to four days per week will be spent in the startup’s office and one day per week in PSL programming such as brown bag luncheons with Philly startup CEOs and CTOs, tours of Philly tech hubs and team building and workforce development workshops.

For more information, sponsorship details or if your startup would like to be a partner and participate in the fellowship, please reach out to Lindsay Tsai at lindsay@phillystartupleaders.org.

So far, participating startups include (note that some of them are on Technically Philly’s 2017 startup hot list):

The hardest part of getting an internship shouldn’t be finding an opportunity. This program aims to ease the barrier to entry for students looking to work in the tech and startup scene. In turn, this fellowship will help to create a direct pipeline to young Philly talent for the startup scene.
