Yasmine Mustafa is building a piece of technology-enabled jewelry that she hopes will can keep women safe from assault.

Mustafa’s company, ROAR for Good, just launched the crowdfunding campaign for its first product, a medallion called Athena that emits a loud alarm and alerts loved ones by text message when you press it. The company hopes to raise $40,000.

The pre-order price is $75, while supplies last at that price. ROAR hopes to ship by spring 2016. The company does not have a manufacturer in place yet, said spokeswoman Hannah Schwarzman, but it is using Washington Avenue makerspace NextFab and New York City-based Shapeways for their 3D models and rendering.

As of press time, ROAR has raised $19,654 from 170 people in just 13 hours.

The company, which graduated from DreamIt Ventures last spring, has also seen success in the venture capital world. ROAR has raised about $250,000, Schwarzman said, up from the $150,000 from local investors that we reported in June.
