WeWork to open Philly’s biggest coworking space yet in the Piazza

With 30,000 square feet right off of N3rd Street, WeWork becomes the latest coworking import to plant a flag in the city.

It’s official: New York City coworking giant WeWork is coming to Philadelphia.

The company has been searching for a space in the city for the past few years, according to a release. (One spot they looked at? The forthcoming East Market tech building.) WeWork finally landed on the Piazza in Northern Liberties and will be opening a more than 30,000-square-foot space there, which will make it the biggest shared office space of its kind when it opens. For reference, the three-story Impact Hub space in Kensington is 27,000 square feet.

WeWork plans to open the location sometime in 2016, said spokesman Eric Gerard.

It’s the next coworking import to plant a flag in the city. Industrious, whose flagship is in Chicago, opened a two-floor, 20,000-square-foot shared office space on South Broad Street earlier this summer, and Pipeline, born in Miami, opened a 21,000-square-foot space in Center City last winter. Meanwhile, the future of some original Philly coworking spots is in question: Venturef0rth is still working to raise $100,000 to stay open and Indy Hall is in discussions about how to move forward with their space, which they may have to leave.

Its Piazza address will essentially make WeWork part of N3rd Street, by proximity at least. It will neighbor SEER Interactive’s new office, as well as web dev firm Jarvus and its civic hacking headquarters, Devnuts.
