1420 Walnut isn’t full of startups.
The 15-floor building is home to lawyers, orthodontists and psychiatrists. That’s probably why the building manager wasn’t sure what to expect when adtech startup Vistar Media moved in. He told cofounder Mark Chadwick that he planned to reinforce all the exposed pipes and make sure they were extra resistant to accidents because who knows? Maybe Vistar would be playing basketball and accidentally hit one or maybe they’d be hanging from the pipes and they would break.
You never know with startups, right? (For the record, Vistar does not have a basketball hoop in the office and we did not see them hanging from any pipes. The team of seven seemed pretty tame when we visited their sunlight-filled office.)
Vistar Media’s engineering team is based in Philadelphia, while its marketing and business development team is headquartered in New York. The engineering team was initially working out of a small Rittenhouse Square apartment but recently upgraded to a bigger space on the ninth floor of 1420 Walnut St. They plan to hire four more in Philly this year.
Since the building is home to more traditional commercial tenants, Vistar had a few requests: Get rid of the drop ceilings. Polish the concrete floors. They decided against an open floor plan and instead have four offices with large windows and wooden doors that slide open and closed, plus a kitchen, a meeting room and a phone booth/breakout space.
