Women are drastically underrepresented in the open source movement. Of the open source contributions made in 2013, only 11 percent were made by women, according to a survey of the open source community.

Girl Develop It wanted to change that. That’s why the nonprofit partnered with civic hacking group Code for Philly last year to launch a summer-long open source fellowship for women. Fellows said the program helped them find their place in the tech community.

This year, the fellowship is back and its reach has grown outside of Philly, too.

In partnership with Code for America, which has local civic hacking “brigades” across the country, three cities will adopt the program, including Miami, Burlington, Vt., and San Francisco, said Girl Develop It executive director Corinne Warnshuis.

The ten-week Philly open source mentorship program is now accepting applications for mentees and mentors. Only women are eligible to be mentees but men and women are both eligible to be mentors.
