America Abroad, Public Radio International’s monthly documentary series, is connecting Philadelphians with the people of Berlin to discuss how Europe and the U.S. are dealing with violent extremism, especially in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attack as well as the recent shooting in Garland, Texas.
The event will be from noon-12 p.m. on Thursday, May 21st at WHYY Independence Mall West.

1. Be part of a binational audience for a nationally syndicated public radio program …

Because this is being put on by the Public Radio International program America Abroad, it’s syndicated across the country and heard globally on NPR Worldwide. Plus it’s a binational Town Hall where you’ll be chatting with another audience in Berlin. Also this event has some big names attached to it. The host in Philadelphia is nationally known public radio personality Jacki Lyden. In Berlin, NPR correspondent Eleanor Beardsley will be talking the helm. Plus they’ll be a range of experts coming into town for the event.

2. Give Bloggers, Hackers, and Techies A Voice

Rather than being an audience as window dressing, this radio program is all about participation. One entire section of the conversation will be devoted to what’s happening in the social media world to counter violent extremism. This is your chance to talk about what to do when you see hate speech online or how to combat extremist propaganda or stop the next YoungLioness from trying to join ISIS.

3. It’s Free (and Great Place to Network)

Not only is the town hall free to attend (though registration is required), it’s a great place to meet other civic-minded Philadelphians to engage in lively debate at a venue that’s on Independence Mall. You’ll be making Ben Franklin proud.
