Why these Science Leadership Academy students are #MoreThanATest

A group of high schoolers launched a website to “show the public all the ways that students’ lives, passions, and experiences cannot be evaluated by high stakes standardized testing.”

“Keystones don’t show my love for art.”

“Keystones don’t determine my future.”

“A test score doesn’t determine my learning journey.”

Those are just some of the messages shared on a new website developed by Philadelphia Student Union members at Science Leadership Academy. The site is called #MoreThanATest and aims to show how limited standardized testing — like the state’s Keystone Exams — is.

“We wanted to show the public all the ways that students’ lives, passions, and experiences cannot be evaluated by high stakes standardized testing,” Nomi Martin-Brouillette, one of the lead student developers of the website, said in a statement.

The website comes at a time when more local parents and students are choosing to opt out of standardized testing.
