University City’s own Corner Bakery opened last week on the 3700 block of Market Street.

It’s one block that’s undergone a transformation in the last three years, going from a quiet block that was home to a University City Science Center building (and makerspace NextFab) to a bustling corridor with a restaurant, two cafes, another new, 13-floor Science Center building and the Department of Making + Doing, the makerspace that replaced NextFab.

The block’s makeover is a nod to the Science Center’s mission of creating a corridor where technologists and researchers can live, work and play. The cafes and restaurants are all in buildings on the 3700 block of Market Street that are joint projects between the Science Center and Wexford Science + Technology, said Science Center spokeswoman Jeanne Mell.

Just around the corner, at 3601 Market Street, the Science Center is building a 28-story, $110 million residential complex, which was slated to be done in the spring but will now open this summer, Mell said. Around another corner, at 3737 Chestnut Street, another residential tower is rising.
