Out of 39 applicants, the School Reform Commission approved five new charter schools last night. Two have a focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. They are: TECH Freire Charter School and MaST Community Charter School (Roosevelt Campus). The schools have until May 31 to approve the SRC’s conditions.
Nearly one quarter of the 39 charter applicants had a STEM focus, as we previously reported. It was the first time in seven years that the district accepted applications for new charters.
From Philly Mag:

SRC chairman Bill Green said the vote came after a “through, high-quality process” of evaluating the proposals and airing them in public. Officials say they held 100 hours of public hearings and received 1,400 letters and emails on the applications.
But in the end, the SRC’s decision pleased neither public school advocates nor education reformers.
